Movie Websites: Friend or Foe?

This weekend I saw The Space Between Us and it was a great movie that was produced by STXEntertainment. In trying to understand what a guest speaker discussed about web navigation, I turned the most familiar entertainment source I know: movies. Before going on further I believe it is important for everyone to understand web navigation the way I do. My understanding of web navigation is this: when you log onto a website how easy is it to find what you are looking for. Some examples are search bubbles, drop down menus, and galleries showcasing the websites content. For the rest of the post I will discuss two major motion pictures websites: The Space Between Us and Hidden Figures.

The Space Between Us

This is the homepage of the website (which is a subpage of the STXEntertainment website itself) and the navigation system is very straightforward and simple. They have everything anyone who is researching this movie needs: tickets, trailer, social media feeds, and more. I think it is a bit redundant to have tickets and videos on there twice. When you click on the tabs such as '"WATCH THE TRAILER" it takes you down the screen to where the trailers are located. Instead of taking you to a different page it keeps you on the same page. When you click "GET TICKETS" it opens a new window about purchasing tickets near your location. This is a very simple but user friendly website for movie. Next is Hidden Figures.

Hidden Figures

This is the homepage of the website, which is yet again a subpage of the movie producers website. It has the same setup as The Space Between Us but the biggest difference is how they want you to go to Facebook and Twitter. There is a large button saying "VISIT FACEBOOK," whereas in The Space Between Us it is just the Facebook icon. It looks better that they want you to actively search Facebook for them because it is easier for people to share something on Facebook and reach a larger audience. That is a smart move for 20th Century Fox to do because they are playing into how social media is important to people currently. This website also features the scrolling down the page when clicking a button which makes it a simpler but very navigable site.

Final thoughts: Are movie websites friends or foes? I think they are a great way to find out which movies are coming out that you are interested in. They are also a great way of finding them on social media quickly and purchasing tickets from your computer. This also helps you to look into which movies are coming out by the same production company and who doesn't love figuring out which movie they want to see next? I know for me the next one I will go and see is Beauty and The Beast.
